Let's talk about a topic that often heightens after the holidays and going into a new year - weight loss! Now that the Thanksgiving holiday has passed and we suddenly realize the New Year is approaching, the familiar resolution of shedding those extra pounds and getting healthier rings loud!
As a Health Educator & Fitness Trainer, this is a common FAQ: How do you actually lose fat? There are so many myths and complicated theories out there, but the truth – and mathematical equation – is much simpler than you might think.
Breaking Down Body Composition
Our body weight is made up of three main macronutrients: fat, protein, and carbs (stored as glycogen), along with water. The rest of our bodyweight comes from our skeleton, organs (including our muscular system), skin, hair, secondary soft tissues (like ligaments and tendons), and other minerals.
By the time we hit our mid-20s, our bodies have usually reached their full growth potential, so most of these components are pretty much set. So, when we talk about weight changes in adulthood, we're primarily discussing shifts in our muscles and fat.
The Simple Science of Weight Changes
Here's the key insight: when adults gain or lose weight, it's mostly happening in two areas – muscle and fat. While you can build muscle through resistance training and proper nutrition, for most people, muscle gains won't dramatically change overall weight!

The Golden Rule of Fat Loss: Caloric Deficit
Want to know the secret to losing fat? It's simple: create a caloric deficit. This means you need to burn more calories than you consume. You can achieve this by:
Eating fewer calories
Increasing your daily energy expenditure (i.e., the amount of energy your body uses for essential body functions and physical activity)
Combining both approaches - which is usually the most effective
Busting Exercise Myths
There's no single "magic" type of exercise for fat loss. Meaning, while the type of exercise you choose to engage in will play a role in weight loss, the body overall isn't limited to a single exercise type when it comes to oxidizing (i.e., burning) or losing fat.
The truth is, ANY type of exercise can help you burn fat, as long as it increases your caloric expenditure.
The Most Effective Fat Loss Strategy
While any exercise helps, the most efficient approach to fat loss involves three key elements:
Maintaining a caloric deficit
Consuming adequate protein
Implementing a progressive resistance training (aka weight lifting) program
Why resistance training? Because it helps you preserve lean muscle mass while losing fat. If you only do cardio or light weights without strategically and progressively challenging your muscles, you'll likely lose both fat and muscle – and that's not the goal. We need muscle!
Pro Tips for Successful Fat Loss
Focus on creating a sustainable calorie deficit - ideally, focus on consuming 500 less calories per day
Prioritize protein intake - aim to consume at least 20g of protein per meal & incorporate protein-based snacks throughout the day (e.g., Greek yogurt, tuna, peanut butter with rice cakes, apples, or celery, protein bars, high-protein trail mix)
Incorporate resistance training across different repetition ranges (e.g., 4 to 15 reps)
Don't get caught up in extreme or overly complicated workout plans - the best plan is the one you will happily commit to and can enjoy!
The Bottom Line
Weight loss, yet more specifically, fat loss doesn't have to be complicated. By understanding the basics of calories, nutrition, and effective exercise, you can achieve your health, weight, and fitness goals.
